Harvard Trainer from Aston Down crashes near Oakridge, 1939

Aston Down Airfiled, when opened on 12th October 1938 included the whole of the former World War One airfield of Minchinhampton but was considerably enlarged to the south.

During mid-November 1939 the unit suffered its first casualty. Sgt. pilot Linton was killed while collecting a Gladiator fighter from Little Rissington, when the aircraft mysteriously caught fire during take off and crashed in flames. Before the month was out the unit suffered a second tragedy when Pilot Officer Masterson lost control of his Harvard trainer near Oakridge. The aircraft went into a spin and crashed to the ground, killing the pilot.
